"Aquatic - new pleating technology" chosen as one of 2003's Book Craftsmanship of the Year award recipients.

In "Book Craftsmanship of the Year 2003," the Danish Association for Book Craftsmanship (Forening for Boghaandværk) writes (translated from Danish):

Sensual, beautiful, sophisticated.

These words describe the works of textile designer Thea Bjerg, and the same words describe the book in which they are presented.

We can begin with the book jacket: It would have been an obvious solution to use one of the fantastic, colourful photographs as a full-page to serve as the book jacket - but no!

Instead, a discreet jacket was chosen in a pastel-like, powdery, tinged pink with silk-screened white typography. As intended, the paper itself commands at least as much attention through its fabric-like quality as any colour photograph ever could have done. The graphical message is played down as well, paving the way for the surprise when the work is opened.

Simple, pleatted, draped.

The pages become animated, rising up and coming alive, as one pages through the book. They are pleated, just as the works of art themselves, connected together into a long, living organism that gains a secret life, to be spread out on the floor or framed individually - the pictures invite it.

The typography is simple, set in Rotis Semi Serif, which can often act unsettled in large amounts, but here it is kept under control with loose leading and justified text.
